Cashmere Care Guide

THE CARE GUIDE

Your Cashmere.
For Life.

With the right care, a New Himalayan Pashmina House piece will outlast trends, seasons, and decades — becoming more beautiful with every year. Here is everything you need to know.

CARE ESSENTIALS AT A GLANCE

The Golden Rules

💧

Cool Water Only

Always wash in cool or lukewarm water — 30°C maximum. Hot water causes cashmere to felt and shrink irreversibly.

🤲

Gentle Hand Wash

Use a mild detergent or cashmere shampoo. Gently squeeze — never rub, twist, or wring the fabric.

📐

Lay Flat to Dry

Never hang cashmere to dry. Lay flat on a clean towel, reshape by hand, and allow to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight.

📦

Fold, Never Hang

Store folded in a breathable bag. Hanging distorts the shoulders and stretches the fibres permanently.

🌿

Cedar, Not Mothballs

Protect from moths with cedar blocks or lavender sachets. Chemical mothballs damage cashmere fibres over time.

🪮

Comb Don’t Pull

Use a cashmere comb to gently remove any pills. Never pull pills off — always comb gently in one direction.

STEP-BY-STEP WASHING GUIDE

Hand Washing Your Cashmere

1

Prepare Your Basin

Fill a clean basin or sink with cool water (approximately 25–30°C). Add a small amount of specialist cashmere shampoo or mild wool detergent — about a teaspoon is sufficient.

2

Submerge Gently

Turn your piece inside out and submerge it gently in the water. Do not drop it in — lower it slowly and allow the fabric to absorb water naturally.

3

Soak and Swirl

Leave to soak for 5–10 minutes, gently swirling occasionally. Do not scrub, rub, or agitate. The water does the cleaning.

4

Rinse Thoroughly

Drain the soapy water and refill with clean cool water. Gently press the piece through the clean water to remove all soap residue. Repeat until water runs clear.

5

Remove Excess Water

Do not wring. Gently press the piece against the side of the basin to remove excess water. Then roll it in a clean, dry towel and press gently.

6

Reshape and Dry Flat

Lay on a dry towel on a flat surface. Gently reshape to its original dimensions by hand. Allow to air dry away from direct heat, sunlight, or radiators.

Cashmere Care

EXPERT TIP

Your cashmere does not need to be washed after every wear. Air it out after use by laying it flat for an hour. Most pieces only need washing 2–3 times per season — less is more.

STORAGE GUIDE

Protecting Your Investment Between Seasons

Wash Before Storing

Always wash your cashmere before storing for the season. Oils, perspiration, and food residue attract moths. Clean storage is safe storage.

🛍️

Breathable Bags Only

Store in cotton or linen garment bags — never plastic. Plastic traps moisture and creates the warm, damp environment that moths love.

🌲

Cedar is Your Friend

Cedar blocks placed inside or around your storage bag naturally deter moths. Replace or re-sand cedar every 6 months to maintain its effectiveness.

📏

Fold, Never Hang

Cashmere stored on hangers will stretch under its own weight. Fold loosely and store flat — ideally not more than two pieces per stack.

🌡️

Cool, Dark, Dry

Store in a cool, dark, dry environment. Avoid basements (damp), attics (temperature extremes), and anywhere near direct sunlight (fading).

🔍

Mid-Season Check

Check your stored pieces once mid-season if storing for several months. Early detection of any moth damage allows for quick action.

STEAMING & FINISHING

Keeping Your Piece Looking Pristine

The Art of Steaming

Steaming is the preferred method for refreshing cashmere between washes — it removes odours, relaxes fibres, and restores the soft, luxurious drape of a new piece.

Never iron cashmere directly. If you must, use the lowest heat setting with a protective cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Hold the steamer 3–4 cm away from the fabric. Never press the steamer head directly against cashmere.

Hang before steaming

Hang your piece from a hanger or door hook. Steaming works best when the fabric is under slight tension — this allows the fibres to relax evenly.

Work section by section

Move the steamer slowly and systematically — don’t rush. Take your time over any wrinkled areas. The entire process typically takes 3–5 minutes.

Finish with your hands

After steaming, gently smooth the fabric with clean hands while it is still warm. This helps to reshape and set the fibres in their best position.

Allow to cool before wearing

Give your piece 10–15 minutes to cool and the fibres to set before wearing. This preserves the freshly steamed drape for longer.

TRAVEL TIPS

Cashmere on the Move

Your cashmere pieces are the ideal travel companion — lightweight, warm, and endlessly versatile. Here is how to keep them looking their best away from home.

🧳

Pack in a Silk Bag

Pack your cashmere in a silk or cotton drawstring bag within your luggage. This protects fibres from snags on zips or hardware.

🌀

Roll, Don’t Fold

For travel, rolling cashmere gently (rather than folding) reduces crease lines and saves space. Unroll and lay flat as soon as you arrive.

💨

Steam on Arrival

Most hotels can provide a steamer or iron. A quick steam session on arrival will restore your piece to perfect condition after a long journey.

🌬️

Air, Don’t Wash

Unless genuinely soiled, avoid washing cashmere while travelling. Lay it flat and allow it to air overnight — cashmere is naturally self-refreshing.
